Meet this year’s Parade Marshal: John Bauer

If service to others is measured in time, dedication, and hard work, few are more deserving of this year’s Parade Marshal honor than John Bauer.

Though quiet and humble, John is constantly giving his time and energy to the Milton community through a seemingly endless list of maintenance projects, volunteer efforts, and acts of service. It was at the suggestion of his late wife, Kelli, that he became the “go-to maintenance guy” at The Gathering Place, where his contributions have touched nearly every corner of the facility. From landscaping and construction projects to event setup, holiday preparations, and countless behind-the-scenes tasks, John’s willingness to lend a hand has helped make The Gathering Place a welcoming space for the entire community.

Alongside his family, John also manages every detail of the annual Fish Boil Fundraiser, a beloved community tradition. He was also the creative mind behind the well-known Pumpkin Launcher that has become a favorite feature of fall festivities. He wears many hats in the community, metaphorically, and is instantly recognizable in his signature bib overalls.

John and Kelli moved to Milton in the 1970s, though his connection to the community began long before that. He fondly remembers spending summers visiting his grandparents on Madison Avenue and attending Milton’s Fourth of July celebrations. He recalls a time when fire hoses sprayed along the parade route and festivities took place at Lamar Park—memories that helped create a lifelong appreciation for the community he now serves.

A former employee of the GM Plant, John has also been a dedicated member of the Milton Masonic Lodge for more than 40 years, where he helps organize the annual Good Friday Fish Fry. Throughout the years, he has been a proud supporter of his children’s activities and athletics, while also contributing to efforts that raise funds and awareness for ALS research.

When asked what keeps him engaged and active within the community, John’s answer was simple:

“Milton’s sense of community.”

Those who know John would likely say that same sense of community is reflected in everything he does. As his daughter shared, “It’s not just in the big moments, but in the everyday things—the unwavering support, the quiet sacrifices, the endless patience, and the commitment to always put his wife and his kids first.”

Through decades of volunteerism, community involvement, and quiet leadership, John Bauer has helped make Milton a better place. His dedication, generosity, and community spirit embody the values celebrated by the Milton Rhythm & Booms Festival, making him a truly deserving choice for the honor of 2026 Parade Marshal.
